ASME B36.10M covers the dimensions, schedules, and nominal weights of welded and seamless wrought steel pipe for high and low temperature and pressure service. This technical reference provides outer diameter (OD), schedule wall thickness, and weight-per-meter values for carbon and alloy steel piping design and procurement desks.
Pipe Weight Calculation Formula
The theoretical nominal weight of carbon and alloy steel pipe is calculated using the standard formula derived from steel density (7,850 kg/m³ or 0.2833 lb/in³):
Metric Formula: W = 0.0246615 × (D – t) × t
Where: W = Weight (kg/m), D = Outside Diameter (mm), t = Wall Thickness (mm)
Standard Schedule Designations
ASME B36.10M schedules represent standardized rating designations corresponding to specific nominal wall thicknesses across nominal pipe sizes (NPS). Standard designations include:
- Standard Schedules: Schedule 10, Schedule 20, Schedule 30, Schedule 40, Schedule 60, Schedule 80, Schedule 100, Schedule 120, Schedule 140, Schedule 160.
- Traditional Weight Designations: Standard Weight (STD), Extra Strong (XS), Double Extra Strong (XXS). Note: STD matches Sch 40 up to 10″ NB, and XS matches Sch 80 up to 8″ NB.
Supporting Reference Note: For austenitic stainless steel thin-wall schedules (Sch 5S, Sch 10S, Sch 40S, Sch 80S), dimensions are governed separately by ASME B36.19M.
Pipe Dimensions, Wall Thickness & Weight Table — NB 1/2″ to 10″
Weights below are calculated from the formula above, for carbon/alloy steel at 7,850 kg/m³ density. Below 12″ NB, STD wall thickness matches Schedule 40 exactly, and XS matches Schedule 80 exactly — so these are shown as single combined columns.

NB 12″ to 24″ — STD and Schedule 40 Diverge
Above 10″ NB, Standard Weight (STD) and Extra Strong (XS) wall thickness stay fixed at 9.53 mm and 12.70 mm respectively, while Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 wall thickness continue increasing with pipe size. This means STD ≠ Sch 40 and XS ≠ Sch 80 at 12″ NB and above — always confirm which designation is specified on a large-bore order.

Procurement & Dimensional Tolerances
Permissible variations in outside diameter, wall thickness, and length are governed by ASTM A530 / ASTM A999. For seamless carbon pipes (ASTM A106), the minimum wall thickness at any point must not be more than 12.5% under the nominal wall specified. All consignments dispatched from Seamless Steel Industries’ Kalyan Phata hub include verified wall thickness measurements documented on the EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate.
